Happy Birthday My Sugar Is Raw!

On July 30th My Sugar Is got one year old!
Time went fast and now I would like to thank all who passed by during this year! It was great to meet new people, some of which are vegan too and shared their experiences, recipes and thoughts.
To celebrate the event I want to share with you some pictures of this beautiful vegan chocolate cake, made by the talented Claudia Lotta (here's the review of its pastries made by Yari).
It was a gift from Max, who asked Claudia to design a cake looking exactly like the one in the Lilo & Stitch movie! The result is truly remarkable: beautiful and delicious too!
I hope this blog brought some people closer to veganism and to more informed food choices. I can't wait to to spend another year together.
Thank you!
Franco

Lunedì 30 luglio My Sugar Is Raw ha compiuto un anno!
Grazie!
Franco

Roasted Eggplant Cream - Crema di Melanzane Arrostite

Today I propose a quick way to prepare a great dish with eggplant. Ideal for summer lunches. Excellent accompanied by raw crackers or toasted bread.

Roasted Eggplant Cream

Ingredients
  • 2 eggplants
  • 2 tablespoon extra virgin oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon sea salt
  • 3 tablespoon lemon juice
  • a tablespoon gomasio with seaweed
  • a handful cashews
Preparation
  • Roast the whole eggplants using a plate or a pan for about 20/25 minutes, until the skin is completely roasted and crispy.
  • Allow eggplant to cool and begin to peel. If the eggplants are cooked enough, they will be very easy to peel.
  • With the help of a wooden spoon or spatula, squeeze the pulp into a bowl, separating it from the stem.
  • Put the pulp in the blender adding salt, olive oil and lemon juice and blend until mixture is smooth. This operation can also be done manually using a fork or a spoon.
  • Put the mixture into a bowl and garnish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, cashews and gomasio.
  • It must be stored in the fridge and it's good served cold.

Light marinated Zucchini - Zucchine in Carpione Leggere

I don't usually eat zucchini in winter even though you can find them all-year round at the supermarket nowadays. Now that's summer, I'm finally having my first zucchini of the year: they come from my dad's orchard, grew up outside and under the hot sun, and are firm, crispy and tasty.
I propose a recipe to eat them marinated but without frying them before, so they are as light as possible, the best to eat when it's to really hot outside. Here's the recipe for:

Light Marinated Zucchini
Ingredients
  • 35 onces zucchini
  • 2 cups white wine
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin oil
  • a handful sage leaves
  • an onion
  • a teaspoon salt
Preparation
  • Wash the zucchini and cut them into chunks.
  • Put the wine, vinegar, olive oil, sage, salt and chopped onion in a saucepan and bring to boil.
  • Combine the zucchini and cook for 4/5 minutes since it starts boiling again.
  • Pour the contents into a large bowl, let it cool and refrigerate.
  • Very good served cold.

Zucchine in Carpione Leggere
Ingredienti
  • 1kg di zucchine
  • 480 ml di vino bianco
  • 120 ml di aceto bianco
  • 2 cucchiai di olio extravergine d'oliva
  • una manciata di foglie di salvia
  • 1 cipolla
  • 1 cucchiaino abbondante di sale

Preparazione
  • Ottime servite fredde.

My Sugar is Raw on tour - Paris

I am back!
A lot of time passed since my last post but I've been very busy at work and had some problems with the internet connection. So let's start again with a small report of my latest trip to Paris where I spent a beautiful weekend at the end of May. The weather was fabulous with sunshine, blue skies and plenty of things to see: the exhibition of Tim Burton at the Cinématèque Française, the beautiful art installation by Daniel Buren at the Grand Palais and an exhibition about Vuitton and Marc Jacobs in Les Arts Decoratifs.

Obviously there have been many opportunities to discover and test vegan restaurants. Paris surely offers a wide choice in vegan food. I returned to places I had already tried that are very well known as The potager du Marais and Le Passage ObligéBut the real surprise was a small cafe near Place de la Bastille: Cafe Ginger. The place is very nice, it's run by a very friendly and kind person and we had there a really good lunch.

To start, a refreshing and energizing smoothie made with carrots, apples, celery and turmeric, perfect for a very hot summer day.

The main course consisted of the mini quiches: there were two choices, the vegetarian with tomatoes and cheese, or the vegan with zucchini and sweet potato. The side dishes were the same for everyone: chickpea hummus, lettuce and avocado, beetroot salad with seeds and spelt with vegetables and curry.
All was fresh, of the highest quality, with perfectly balanced flavors and fair portions.

Finally, two choices of vegan dessert! Cheescake and chocolate cake.
I chose the chocolate cake with nuts. It was really good and tasty. The sour lemon sauce paired perfectly with the taste of dark chocolate.

The following review of Le Pain Quotidien is dedicated to o all vegans in Paris looking for something to eat for breakfast. It 's a place I love because it allows vegan people to have an excellent breakfast (which is very rare in Paris where bistrots are dominated by croissants with butter, eggs, milk and cream). Furthermore it's a very nice place with organic food. It 's very popular and offers table service for breakfast, brunch and lunch, in addition to selling great bread and sweets.

There's an excellent selection of organic jams and sweet creams (also a vegan one with hazelnuts!) to taste with a bread served in slices on a small platter of ceramic. The particularity of the place is a large table where you can seat and eat with other people to exchange jars of jam and creams with.
The choice does not end with vegan bread: I also ate a good muesli with soy milk and a very good organic orange juice!

///
